RHÔNE
RHôNE

The love and compliment Robert Parker gave to Rhône in the past decade had uplifted the fame of this region globally. Rhône wine region is situated in southern France and is named because of the Rhône River Valley. It has a long wine making history, the first cultivated vines were probably planted around 600 BC. And after Pape Clement V moved to Avignon, with the wealth and passion of the church, Rhône's wine production expanded greatly, so as its importance in French wine. Due to the fame and history, Châteauneuf-du-Pape therefore became the first AOC region in 1936.

Rhône is divided into two sub-regions with distinct vinicultural traditions. The northern sub-region produces red wines from the dominant Syrah grape, sometimes blended with Viognier for co-fermentation, and white wines from Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier grapes; whereas to the south it frequently plays second fiddle to other varieties, such as Grenache or Mourvèdre, which synergize as the iconic Grenache - Syrah - Mourvèdre blend.

About Maison Tardieu-Laurent

YOUTHFUL AND PASSIONATE ELITE RHôNE NEGOCIANT

Tardieu Laurent is one of the top Rhone wine negociant firms. It was established in 1996 and takes its name from the two original, founding partners, Michel Tardieu and Dominique Laurent. They are one of the few domaines that strives to use biodynamic farming techniques. They produce wines from Burgundy as well as from a myriad of Rhone appellations including; Condrieu , Cornas , Crozes Hermitage , St. Joseph , St. Peray, Languedoc, Chateauneuf du Pape , Hermitage and Cote Rotie. In Cote Rotie, their fruit is sourced from Moulin, Chavaroche, Vaillière, Landonne and Rozier. Michel Tardieu is also working in the Bordeaux appellation with estates in St. Emilion.

Tardieu-Laurent is an "artisan" Rhône producer, making between half a dozen and 20 or so barrels of each wine. The majority of the wines are from the southern Rhône although superb cuvees of Cote Rôtie and Hermitage are also produced. The wines are all aged in small oak casks (often 100% new) and bottled with no fining nor filtration.  Michel Tardieu insists his aim with each appellation to express powerfully the fruit and sense of place, never masking these factors with wood. Their cellar in the Château Loumarin possesses one of the coolest underground caves in the southern Rhone.
