Valpolicella, one of the most prestigious wine-making regions in Italy, has been dedicated to wine-making since the times of ancient Greeks. The name means the valley of many cellars. It is located in the eastern part of Veneto near Verona. A mild to cool continental climate influenced by Lake Garda and the Adriatic Sea. The Valpolicella production zone was enlarged to include surrounding plains when Valpolicella achieved DOC status in 1968.
Valpolicella ranks just after Chianti in total Italian DOC wine production. The rosso is typically made from 3 grape varieties: Corvina Veronese, Rondinella, and Molinara. This region also produces iconic wines made from dried grapes, Recioto dessert wine and Amarone. In 2009, the production of Amarone and Recioto from Valpolicella DOC received their own separate DOCG status.
