CHIANTI - the Black Rooster

The Chianti region, extending roughly over the two main city provinces of Firenze and Siena in central Italy. The tradition of cultivating vines in Chianti started before the Roman Empire. The blend for Chianti and Chianti Classico is 75–100% Sangiovese. The Chianti DOC title was created in 1967, and in 1984 was promoted to the highest level of Italian wine classification DOCG.

Within the Chianti DOCG there are 8 defined sub-zones, producing the largest volume of DOC/G wines in Italy. Wines produced outside these vineyards are labelled simply "Chianti". Only Chianti from sub-zones may boast the black rooster seal (known in Italian as a gallo nero) on the neck of the bottle.

About Montevertine

True Beauty of Chianti Sangiovese
Montevertine does not own a winemaking history of a hundred year, everything started since the founder, Sergio Manetti, wanted to buy a holiday villa in Chianti. The first vintage was produced in 1971 for Sergio's family and friends, by chance, Sergio Manetti decided to presend his wines at Italy's leading wine show, Vinitaly in Verona, via the Chamber of Commerce in Siena. The immediate success further pushed Sergio to dedicate all of his efforts into winemaking.

Montevertine is the first winery in Chianti who produces single varietal wines, Sergio deeply believed into the potential of Sangiovese. He wanted to produce wine using 100% Sangiovese, and refused to add in any of the white grapes like Malvasia or Trebbiano into his reds, which was against the regulations of the time. Montevertine's wine are not qualfied as DOC Chianti but as Red Table Wine from Raddi in Chianti.

Le Pergole Torte, the flagship of Montevertine, are widely recognised by the world as it coveted 3 glasses in Gambero Rosso, high 90+ points from Robert Parker and gold medals in international awards. Although much wrongly categoried them as "Super Tuscany", Montevertine is actually a true advovate & believer in tradition and the indegenious grape variety - Sangiovese.
