PIEDMONT - the King of Vino Italiano

Located in the far north-west of Italy, Piedmont sits at the foot of the Western Alps – the name Piemonte means 'the foot of the mountains' – which forms its border with France and Switzerland. It is the home of more DOCG wines than any other Italian region. Nearly 84% of all the areas wine production fall under a DOC/G designation. The area has no IGT classification.

The well-known and respected names in Piedmont are Barolo and Barbaresco. Nebbiolo wines are known for their tar and roses bouquet, and the cellaring potential. The Barbera grape is the most widely planted variety in all of the Piedmont and makes a juicy, muscular red wine that is not as tannic as Barolo and Barbaresco.

About Damilano

Being selected as Top 100 Wines of Year 2005 by Wine Spectator

The origins of the Damilano family company dates back to over a century ago, when Guiseppe Borgogno, the great-grandfather of the current owners, started to grow and make wine from his own grapes. This tradition was kept up by Giacomo Damilano, the founder’s son-in-law, together with his children and grandchildren.

The vineyards, partly owned and partly leased, are situated in the most famous crus of the Langa region: Cannubi, Liste, Fossati, and Brunate, which are almost entirely cultivated with Nebbiolo da Barolo, and to a lesser extent, with Dolcetto and Barbera varietals.

A Long History of Barolo Grand Cru

Cannubi is by far the most famous and renowned cru, with accolades that can be found as far back as historical documents dated in the 1700s. The oldest bottle in the Langhe is preserved in Bra by the Manzone family and bears the words "Cannubi 1752".

This precious heirloom demonstrates the established reputation of the Cannubi vineyard even before the advent of the Barolo wine category. Cannubi predates even Barolo.
